How Often Should You Change Your Air Filters?

Do you know how often you should be changing the air filters in your AC unit? Most people don’t, but that’s okay. Here at Air Rescue, we want to educate our customers to make sure they are taking proper care of their AC units, homes, and families.

If you change your AC air filters out to early, you could waste money on air filters. If you change them out too late, then you run the risk of wear and tear on your AC unit, as well as dirtier air in your home. So what is the right time frame for you to replace your air filters? At Air Rescue, we recommend that you change out your air filters every 3-6 months.

There are a lot of factors that go into how often you should be changing air filters. Some of these factors include how often you run your AC unit, the location and size of your house, how many pets you have, and whether you have allergies or not.

If you are constantly running your AC unit, you might want to consider replacing your air filters every 45 days. Constantly running your AC unit is a great way to keep the air in your house clean and dust-free, but it does make your air filters dirtier quicker. On the other hand, if you don’t run your AC unit that much, you can get away with replacing your air filters up to every 6 months.

If you live in a dusty area where there might be construction, you as well should consider replacing your air filters every 45 days. The dust from outside can get into your air filters, causing them to get dirtier, faster.

The number of pets you have also factor into how often you should be changing your air filters. The more pets you have, the more dander there is floating in the air. So, the more pets you have, the sooner you should replace your air filter.

If you suffer from allergies, you might want to change your air filters sooner than 90 days. You should also consider buying a higher quality filter to help with your allergy relief.

Here are some more signs to keep an eye on to help you decide if you should be replacing the air filters in your AC unit.

  1. The air conditioning unit is too hot
  2. The air isn’t cold enough
  3. The electric bill has increased
  4. Your allergies are getting worse
  5. Dust is building up near your vents
