How to Manage Your Home’s Humidity
Homeowners, business owners, and HVAC customers often ask us how they can manage their home’s humidity. The answer, though it may seem obvious, is ventilation. You need a quality ventilation system to properly ventilate your home or business and rid the air of excess moisture. Below, we’ll explain a few ways to ensure your ventilation system keeps your home or business at the proper humidity levels.
High Humidity Risks
Excess moisture in the air can lead to problems such as mold and mildew growth, musty odors, and condensation on windows. Too much humidity can also be damaging to electronics and furnishings. On the other hand, insufficient humidity can cause static electricity, respiratory problems, and woodwork cracking. That’s why it’s crucial to maintain proper humidity levels in your home or business using a quality ventilation system.
Managing Humidity
Below are a few tips on managing humidity using ventilation:
- Check for drafts. If you feel a draft coming from any window or door, that indicates that outside air is coming into your home and disrupting the indoor air quality. Use weatherstripping or caulking to seal any cracks or gaps around doors and windows to prevent drafts from coming in.
- Use exhaust fans wisely. Exhaust fans are designed to remove humid air from cooking, laundry, and bathing areas. Be sure to turn them on before you start cooking, bathing, or doing laundry, and leave them on for at least 30 minutes after you’re done to remove all the humid air from those areas.
- Use a humidifier or dehumidifier (depending on the season). A humidifier adds moisture to the air during dry winter months when there isn’t enough natural humidity. A dehumidifier does the opposite by removing moisture from the air during hot, muggy summer months when there is too much natural humidity in the air. Many homes have whole-house humidifiers or dehumidifiers connected to their HVAC systems for optimal comfort and efficiency.
Following the tips above, you can help ensure that your home or business has proper humidity levels year-round using ventilation.
