Is Your HVAC System Failing? 7 Warning Signs To Watch For
HVAC failures are terrible. You know the feeling: coming home from work on a hot, humid summer day only to find that your living space is emulating camping on a Floridian beach, or a brisk winter evening made arctic by a lack of heat.
It may seem impossible to determine or even prevent an HVAC failures; however, it is not an impossible undertaking. Our team at Air Rescue will definitely be here for your repairs, but it doesn’t hurt to educate you on the subject.
Your HVAC system is like a mechanical living being, where if it is not ‘feeling well,’ it lets you know. So what are some of the warning signs that you might need to make a HVAC house call, or have an entirely new system installed?
7 Vital Warning Signs
The first three start with your senses. A failing HVAC system will give off both strange smells, such as rotten eggs or moldy and musty scents, and odd squealing noises that demand your attention. Visually, puddles of water will often surround your system.
The next two signs require your sense of touch. Gauge the rooms in your home. Is one comfortable while another is freezing or sweltering? Additionally, how is the air flow in general? Hold your hand over a few vents to see if one is putting out more air than another.
The final two serve as a reminder that statistics don’t lie. Are your energy bills through the roof compared to a year ago? Lastly, check the age of your HVAC system. Most last between 10 and 15 years. If it is around that age and giving off these other warning signs, a replacement may be necessary.
General Preventative Measures
While your HVAC system is fully functional, there are best practices and preventative measures that you can take to extend the life of your system. These tips will save you on repair costs in the long run.
Florida is hot during the summer, but do your best to avoid overtaxing your system by cranking the air conditioning. Lowering your system below 70 degrees can actually cause it to freeze, so consider moderate temperatures and running a ceiling fan to circulate the air and keep things cool.
Other than having a system inspection done regularly, be sure to have your ductwork cleaned frequently. Most do not realize that dust and other contaminants that build up in your furnace filter can damage a heating system by becoming so thick, it finds its way into your heat registers.
