Set Your Thermostat to Vacation Mode Before your Next Getaway

With the spring season finally underway, you’re probably busy planning for a summer vacation with your family. Putting together all the details for your much-deserved getaway is exciting and overwhelming, to say the least. There are hotels to book, cars to rent, flights to book, suitcases to pack-the pre-traveling to-do list really goes on and on!

While you are incredibly busy getting everything organized before your departure, there is one thing that you must not forget to do before this upcoming trip; be sure to set your home’s thermostat to a “vacation” temperature. That’s because even a 1-degree difference in interior temperature can save you as much as 7% of energy consumption on your next bill! This doesn’t mean shutting down your HVAC system for the days you are gone; it’s about finding the appropriate temperature that is the perfect balance of comfortable and energy-efficient.

When setting your thermostat before boarding the plane or packing up the rental car, remember, the ideal temperature for your home is 70 degrees in living spaces, 63 degrees in bedrooms, and 72 degrees in bathrooms. To average this out, if you are gone for more than two hours during your trip (and we sure hope you are!) set the temperature in all areas of your home to 60 degrees.

If you are lucky and have a smart thermostat, it can do a lot of this work for you-some have a “holiday mode” option available, which automatically will set the ideal temperature in your house.

After coming back from a memorable and relaxing vacation, the last thing you want to come home to is a high energy bill! That’s why programming your thermostat for vacation mode is an essential task to complete before any upcoming trip.
