What’s That Noise from My AC Unit?
You’re enjoying a peaceful afternoon at home when suddenly, you hear loud noises throughout the house. It’s nothing to be alarmed about, but you know exactly what it is: your air conditioner. Since having comfortable air at home is a must, you decide to leave your air conditioning on and deal with the noise from AC. Let’s face it, we’ve all been there.Â
There are a number of different sounds your AC unit can make for a variety of different reasons. Some of them you may be able to fix yourself, and others may need AC repair. At Air Rescue Air Conditioning, we want to make sure that you know the best tips and tricks to keep your AC system working at its best. Here are some of the noises you may hear from your air conditioning, and their causes:Â
Banging
Banging from your A/C is usually the result of a broken compressor. This can come from normal wear and tear of your unit, and parts can become loose inside and rattle around, creating the banging sound you hear. Unfortunately, you can’t really repair a broken compressor and you’ll have to call a technician to replace it.Â
Buzzing
An electrical problem, such as broken coils, motors, capacitors, or loose wiring, typically causes buzzing from your AC inside or outside the house. For these issues, you’re best calling in an experienced professional to fix these problems.Â
Clicking
Clicking sounds from your AC typically come from one of two issues. If you hear clicking when you start your AC and it still won’t turn on, your thermostat might be broken, and you’ll need a repairman to fix or replace it. If the clicking happens while the AC is running, a small object could be lodged in the unit, and the fan is hitting the object. In this case, you can turn off your A/C and remove the object yourself.Â
Humming
If you hear humming sounds from your AC, it may indicate it’s time for your annual technician checkup to ensure everything is working properly. This noise can result from loose parts, coils, or a motor in need of lubrication. It’s certainly not urgent or serious, the longer you ignore the humming, the more serious the problem can get.
Hissing/Screaming
If you hear hissing or screaming sounds from your AC, turn your unit off and call a technician immediately. These sounds are typically caused by a refrigerant leak or high internal pressure inside the unit. Both these issues can not only damage your A/C system but also put anyone living in your home in danger. The good news is, most AC units have internal sensors to monitor either of these problems. These sensors will shut off your system automatically before you’re in a dangerous situation.Â
Though hearing these sounds may be a stressful thing to worry about, getting it fixed doesn’t have to be.
