Preparing Your HVAC System for the Spring

As spring rolls around the corner and we say goodbye to cooler winter weather, you might be beginning to start up your air conditioning and HVAC system to prepare for the warmer weather. But switching your HVAC from heating to cooling isn’t always the easiest transition, and cold weather may have caused some hiccups that you don’t know you need to sort out. Before you’re in desperate need of some A/C during the warm weather, here are some things to add to your HVAC maintenance checklist:

Change Your Air Filter

Since one of your HVAC’s main jobs is to filter out any contaminants from your air, take the time to change out your air filters! A collection of dust, debris, and other allergens is bound to have piled up during the winter months, and it’s possible for it to pile so much that it will restrict airflow. Replacing your air filter regularly will ensure your HVAC system is working properly, and increase its longevity overall.

Check Your Ducts

Your air filters are not the only things that need to be cleaned out! Make sure you’re cleaning out your air ducts as well. Getting rid of the accumulation of dust, skin particles, and other debris from your air ducts will help lower your energy consumption and improve the overall quality of air circulating throughout your home. Now that’s a spring cleaning we can all get behind!

Check the Outside Area

Throughout the winter, it’s more than likely that branches, dead leaves, dirt, or mud have collected outside around the area near your HVAC unit. Removing and clearing this area will do wonders for your AC tune-up, and will greatly improve the performance of your HVAC unit!

Upgrade Your Thermostat

Before you plan on using your A/C full time, give your thermostat a test drive and make sure it is controlling the air conditioning and cooling properly. Since your thermostat is basically the only part of your HVAC that you will be using, ensuring that your thermostat is running efficiently is essential. Now would be a great time to upgrade your thermostat to a smart thermostat, which will help you save energy and money, while also making it even easier to control the temperature in your home.

Make a Maintenance Plan

To make the most out of your HVAC system and to increase its lifespan, make a maintenance plan and an annual appointment with your provider to check up on your HVAC. Scheduling a professional to come take a look at your HVAC will guarantee a good cleaning, and a pro set of eyes to see if there are any problems you weren’t aware of.
