What’s That Noise from My A/C Unit?

You’re enjoying a peaceful afternoon at home when suddenly, you hear loud noises throughout the house. It’s nothing to be alarmed about, but you know exactly what it is: your air conditioner. Since having comfortable air at home is a must, you decide to leave your air conditioning on and deal with the noise. Let’s face it, we’ve all been there.

While there are a number of different sounds your A/C unit can make for a variety of different reasons, some of them you may be able to fix yourself, and others may need A/C repair. At Air Rescue Air Conditioning, we want to make sure that you know the best tips and tricks to keep your A/C system working at its best on your own so that you only hear from us when you absolutely need to. Here are some of the noises you may hear from your air conditioning, and their causes:

Banging

Banging from your A/C is usually the result of a broken compressor. This can come from normal wear and tear of your unit, and parts can become loose inside and rattle around, creating the banging sound you hear. Unfortunately, a broken compressor can’t really be repaired, and you’ll have to call a technician to replace it.

Buzzing

Buzzing from inside or outside the house from your A/C is typically caused by an electrical problem, including broken coils, motors, capacitors, or loose wiring. For these issues, you’re best calling in an experienced professional to fix these problems.

Clicking

Clicking sounds from your A/C is typically caused by one of two things. If you’re hearing the clicking as you start your A/C and it still won’t turn on, your thermostat may be broken, and you will need a repairman to fix or replace it. If you’re hearing the clicking as the A/C is running, a small object may be lodged in the unit, and the clicking is the sound of the fan hitting the object. In this case, you can turn off your A/C and remove the object yourself.

Humming

Humming sounds are usually not anything to get too worried about and may signal that it’s time for your annual checkup from a technician to make sure things are working properly. Humming can be caused by loose parts or coils, or a motor needing lubrication. It’s certainly not urgent or serious, the longer you ignore the humming, the more serious the problem can get.

Hissing/Screaming

If you hear hissing or screaming sounds from your A/C, turn your unit off and call a technician immediately. These sounds are typically caused by a refrigerant leak or high internal pressure inside the unit. Both these issues can not only damage your A/C system but also put anyone living in your home in danger. The good news is, most A/C units have internal sensors to monitor either of these problems and will shut off automatically before you’re in a dangerous situation.

Though hearing these sounds may be a stressful thing to worry about, getting it fixed doesn’t have to be.
