Why Is My AC Running Constantly?

Regulating the AC and temperature inside your home especially during the hot, summer months can be a stressful and sometimes annoying task. This can be made even worse when your AC keeps running, even when it seems like it shouldn’t be. Not only is this a huge waste of energy and resources, but this can rack up quite a hefty utility bill for you!

If your AC seems to be running constantly, then there are a few things that could be wrong with your air conditioning. While some of them may require professional HVAC help to fix, some problems just need a little troubleshooting from you. Here are some common reasons why your A/C is running constantly:

Incorrect AC Unit Sizing

If your AC unit is too small or it has improper dimensions, it will need to run constantly to try to cool your home to your desired temperature. However, since the dimensions are too small, it will rarely get there. Similarly, if your unit is the wrong size, other parts of your HVAC system are also probably the wrong size, such as the air ducts. This means that air is inefficiently flowing throughout the house. If this is the case, then you will have to re-install a new, correctly sized system.

Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerant is essential to the function of your A/C system. It absorbs heat from your air and brings it outside, bringing back the cool air indoors. If the refrigerant is low, the unit will work harder to cool your home. To get this fixed, you’ll have to call an experienced HVAC professional to handle it, as refrigerant is extremely dangerous to humans if handled incorrectly.

Dirty Air Filters

Sometimes when your air filters are too dirty, the amount of dirt and debris caught in it will literally obstruct the cool air, causing the system to overwork itself. This is a pretty simple fix: just replace your air filters! Dirty A/C parts can cause overworking in general, so make sure you check your evaporator coils and your condenser coils to make sure there are no other issues.

Broken Thermostat

If your thermostat is broken, it could be incorrectly reading the temperature inside of your home, making the A/C unit continue running even if your home has reached the right temperature. Everything could be working perfectly, but if your thermostat is reading wrong, that will cause everything to go off! Fixing this is as simple as just calling an electrician to repair or replace the thermostat.
